Like any sport or recreation, ballroom dancing has its own ‘equipment’. The Grand Ballroom carries a selection of ballroom dance shoes for both Ladies and Gentlemen. Our shoes are the Star Dance brand. For a serious ballroom dancer proper dance shoes are a must. Ballroom dance shoes are designed specifically for dancing. They have suede soles to provide a neutral surface that is neither slippery nor sticky. They are constructed to provide maximum flexibility for comfort and control. The ladies’ high heeled shoes are made with a reinforced heel for added strength.
For gentlemen
our three most popular styles are the Oxford, Gibson, and the Tango. The Oxford and Gibson are generally used for Standard dances, and the Tango is used for Latin dances. The basic difference in these three styles is that the Oxford and Gibson has a larger heel base than the Tango, whereas the Tango is a softer leather than the Oxford. The Tango is available in Lycra, and in a 1 1/2-inch heel. For the expert Latin dancer, we are now stocking the Spanish Tango, a more flexible version of the Tango.
For ladies
we have several styles available for both Standard and Latin. Our styles come in a variety of fabrics such as black leather, gunmetal, white satin, metallic gold or silver leather, and tan satin. The white satin can be dyed to match your favourite outfit. The heel heights vary from the normal height of 2 1/2-inch to 2-inch. Also very popular for ladies is the “Heather” in black leather or beige Lycra. This shoe is similar to the men’s Tango, with a 1 1/2-inch cuban heel.
As with any footwear, the best shoe for you will be the one that feels the best on your foot. Be sure that the shoe is not too tight or too loose. The leather shoes will stretch slightly. For ladies, if you are concerned about wearing down the heels on your shoes, we also carry heel protectors to extend the life of your shoe lifts. The suede sole of the shoe should be lightly brushed to clean. We carry shoe brushes designed for this purpose.
